In the wake of the BP oil spill disaster – the extent of which is still unknown – more and more people are considering renewable energy as viable options. In fact, many Republicans are even abandoning the cry, “drill baby drill,” and withdrawing support for offshore drilling here in the States.
Fortunately, it was already a perfect time to go solar. Retail prices have dropped more than 50% in recent years, and governments across the board are offering tax incentives and rebates to defray costs up to 80%. For many reasons, you can install solar panels to turn blue into green.
To begin with, you can save green by nixing your electricity bills. Many solar arrays will reduce your power bill to zero. Not only will that add up significantly over time, but when utility rates rise, you don’t have to worry about that either.
If you live in a region that experiences power outages – whether due to weather or other factors – you may not need to invest in a gas generator. Solar electricity generated by your system may be stored in batteries to continue to give you power, even when your neighbors cannot turn on the news or open their garage door.
One final factor from a green monetary standpoint is the increase in property value you’ll enjoy. For every $1 in annual electricity bills that is saved by installing solar panels results in an equivalent $20 rise in property value. So, $1200 per year (a very modest estimate) is automatically $24,000 added to the value of your home. Be sure to factor that in when calculating return on investment!
From an environmental standpoint, turning blue into green is just as easy!
Solar energy is a zero-carbon source of electricity! The energy output of 1 kilowatt (KW) solar energy unit can replace the equivalent of burning of 170 pounds of coal and 300 pounds of carbon dioxide. While there are some reasonable concerns about the life and disposal of solar panels, they are operational for 25-35 years and can be recycled much like computers, cell phones, cameras and more!
Why not turn blue into green this year? Consider installing solar panels at your home and enjoy the idea of your wallet being lighter and the air a bit cleaner!
