Solars panels on Campus Center roof

New Jersey solar power

A few months ago, Owens Corning and SunEdison announced the activation of a 440-kilowatt (kW) photovoltaic (PV) solar system on the rooftop of the Owens Kearny New Jersey facility.  The activation came right on the heels of the award of the first energy stimulus grant  under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, to SunEdison.

While rooftop solar installations are becoming more frequent, this project is particularly important for the industry.  Brian Jacolick, the general manager, North America, for SunEdison, noted:

“The Owens Corning Kearny facility raises the profile of solar adoption in the United States. The company’s forward-thinking view of solar serves as a model for businesses who want to control high energy costs while preserving the environment. Owens Corning also takes the lead with this solar installation as one of the first sites to be funded by the Recovery Act’s Section 1603 (Grant-in-lieu of Investment Tax Credit). The grant is a great stimulus to solar adoption and renewable energy, and we are pleased that this first project was developed with an industry-leader like Owens Corning.”

The companies entered into a long-term solar power services agreement, under which the solar panels will be financed and maintained by SunEdison, and Owens Corning will be permitted to use the PV solar system at its Kearny location.  Over the 20-year life of the agreement, more than 9.5 million kWh of clean, free solar electricity will be produced, offsetting more than 14 million tons of CO2!

The move is a strategic decision by Owens Corning to “green” its operations and implement sustainability policies adopted by the corporation.  Transitioning to a zero-emissions PV solar system will allow it to deliver on its commitment to do business in an environmentally sound, energy-efficient manner.
