Commercial rooftop solar installations are becoming more and more commonplace among major companies in the U.S.

This week, one of the leading toy retailers, Toys “R” Us announced that it will begin constructing a solar panel system at its distribution system in Flanders, New Jersey.

When the installation is complete, it will be the largest rooftop solar array in North America.

The 1.5 million square foot facility will use about 37,000 PV solar panels, covering 70% of the 32-acre rooftop.  A solar panel installation of this size will generate enough solar electricity to offset about 72% of the energy needs of the distribution center (5.38 MW).  Toys “R” Us will not purchase and own the solar panels itself.  Rather, the system will be built, owned and operated by Constellation Energy Group Inc. pursuant to a solar power purchase agreement.

One Response to “Solar Panels on Toys R Us”

  1. What a cool story to hear added to the fact New Jersey is also actively pursuing another renewable energy source offshore wind. Only if the va area would realize the potential for our state for virginia alternative energy and virginia renewable energy.
