Will the Pope get a Solar Powered Popemobile?

I guess the Pope wants to jump on the bandwagon when it comes to electric vehicles.  The Mercedes Benz car in which Pope Benedict travels will soon run on the energy of the sun – and maybe the Son, too.  A solar powered Popemobile is in the works.

The Pontiff wishes to cut down on on CO2 emissions and turn to clean, green fuel.  Using solar panels to charge up the battery of an electric Popemobile is the Pope’s desire.  Recently, a Vatican spokesman said they would gladly accept a donated solar powered electric Popemobile if any automaker is moved to create one.

A solar powered Popemobile would add to the solar installations already in place at the Vatican.  Solar panels cover the main auditorium to generate clean electricity and a solar cooling unit exists in the cafeteria.

So – the race is on for a collaboration to create a solar powered Popemobile!  C’mon electric car manufacturers!

One Response to “A Solar Powered Popemobile?”

  1. It is possible but what would be more cost effective is to make the solar charging station independent of the vehicle. Many such charging stations have already been put in to practice. The vehicle itself would never be able to host enough “Solar Panels” to make an effective charging solution. EV’s are practical but expensive. However, onboard charging solutions still need to be developed and are a long ways off for the power required for inertia. It’s unlikely that onboard systems will ever be photovoltaic based.
