Con Edison Solar Pilot Project in New York

Con Edison has established a solar pilot project in New York.  The utility requested approval of an 18-month solar energy program that will cover homes, businesses and even its own facilities.

The behemoth utility, one of the largest investor-owned energy companies, is better known for its electric, gas and steam service provided to more than 3 million customers in New York City and Westchester County.

The solar energy project would be the first of its kind in New York City.  The hope is that Con Edison’s solar pilot project will jump start solar installations in the city, as well as interest in renewable energy options.

Con Edison’s goal is to generate 12 megawatts of solar electricity by 2011, as follows:

  • 5 MW from large installations of 200 kilowatts or more;
  • 5 MW from smaller installations, for residential or small to medium commercial customers; and
  • 2 MW on Con Edison facilities in daytime peak-electric use neighborhoods.

The project is intended to implement Governor Paterson’s Renewable Energy Task Force recommendations, and support energy goals of the City’s PlaNYC.  Con Edison’s VP for Strategic Planning commented:

“From the White House to Albany to City Hall, renewable energy is seen as a keystone for freeing the country from its dependence on fossil fuels and reducing carbon dioxide emissions, while creating new jobs. What we learn will be invaluable, allowing us to better map the maximum beneficial impact of future investment in solar for our customers and the electric grid.”

There are many empty rooftops in NYC that are just begging for solar panels to be installed.  With Con Edison’s solar pilot project, not only will tons of CO2 emissions be saved, but important information regarding the impact of solar energy installations on the grid and overall consumer interest and support will be obtained.  Stimulus bill funds will help pay for the cost of the program.

Its more than time for the Big Apple to go green.

Will NYC love going solar?  Can Con Edison promote a cleaner, greener image for itself?
