Recently, I researched whether Disney parks such as Disneyland and Disney World in the United States had incorporated solar energy into their massive operations and came up largely empty-handed. Disney has always prided itself on its impeccably clean, maintained parks and friendly employees. Why wouldn’t it be a leader in converting to solar power, particularly given the fact that two of its best-known parks are located in sunny Southern California and Florida?
Disneyland is one of my favorite places to visit. It truly is a magical kingdom. All day long, rides entertain children and adults alike. At night, the entire park lights up with spectacular parades, singing and a fireworks display. I have recently wondered… how much electricity is being consumed there? Mickey Mouse and his friends must have a gigantic carbon footprint!
Now, to be fair, Disney parks have made some efforts to convert to solar power. The Universe of Energy at Walt Disney World’s Epcot Center is covered with solar panels that “partially power the ride system.” The attraction is created to explain the history of energy, energy resources and where to find new energy. Kids can learn quite a lot about fossil fuels and renewable energy resources. In addition, earlier this year, Disney installed 2 solar panel arrays on top of a sound stage at Walt Disney Studios.
Still, I find it a bit “Goofy” that Disney Parks have not incorporated solar power into more of its attractions. Just wonder with me how much juice is needed to power the Main Street Electrical Parade at Disneyland:
While I believe that Disney could be “greener” by installing solar panels throughout its parks, I did find a Disney Environmental Report which outlines the practices the corporation is taking to reduce energy consumption by its operations at Disney parks. In its “Strive for Five” program, it is working to reduce energy consumption by 5% through a number of practices. With respect to solar, these efforts include:
“Cast Members replaced neon lights with light emitting diodes (LEDs) in many signs and decorations including numerous holiday installations. Cinderella’s Castle was covered in more than 170,000 new LED white lights. Although numerous, these lights only used the equivalent energy of 12 microwave ovens.”
Similarly, the castle at Hong Kong Disneyland was outfitted with LED lights. Energy savings are taking place at Disneyland Resort Paris, as well.
Despite a plan for 5% energy savings, I still have yet to read about solar-powered rides at any of the Disney parks. The clean, renewable energy resource can and should be considered along with the other laudable environmental efforts of Disney.
The “Happiest Place on Earth” can be among the greenest! Just maybe, fairy tales can come true…. I sure hope to be soon reading about solar-powered Disney parks.

Home solar systems are
getting less expensive by the month.
The new tax breaks are going to make
it easier for most homeowners
to afford AND the handyman homeowner
can actually do this himself without
much difficuly.
Thanks for the great info at your
site!
