Looking for information on solar companies?

I have been blogging about renewable energy for the past 6 months, and have been practicing land use and environmental law for 14 years.  One question that I regularly receive concerns the best solar companies.  In other words, where can someone go to find out information about solar businesses when deciding whether to go solar.

In addition to checking in here at Solar Panels – Green Power, and its sister blog, Solar Power – PV Panels, there are a few additional websites worth reviewing.  The beauty of the Internet is that it is fast, accurate, and world wide!  When making a decision about installing solar panels or other solar energy devices, you want to make sure that you have the best information possible.

First, you’ll want to check Solarcompanies.com.  It is a national directory for people that live in the United States.  The site has links to individual states – just click on where you live and you can get more information about solar companies in your area.  One thing to note, however, is that these companies have to pay to get a listing.  Therefore, I was rather disappointed to see only three listings for Oregon.  However, if you have a solar business, you should consider advertising there.  It ranks at the top of Google searches for solar companies.

Another good resource is Solarbuzz.com.  This site has an international base of solar companies and also includes industry news and R&D information.  It is updated regularly, so you can be sure you’ll get the most up-to-date info possible.

Get solar panel information by researching solar companies

I have also had some success with the Yahoo! Directory.  Its Solar Companies listing has more than 7 pages of names and links to solar websites.  The only difficulty is that you have to sort out the information based on your needs and where you live.  However, one helpful aspect is that they are listed by popularity in descending order.  Or, you can switch the view to see the companies listed alphabetically.

Did you find the name of a company and want to learn more?  Don’t forget to look into YouTube.  I have found a number of video clips created by corporations and happy (and not so much) customers.  For example, check out this short from Lumeta:

Thinking about investing in renewable energy like solar?  Well, you’ll want to check Greenchipstocks.com.  In addition to reviewing information posted at the site, you can get e-newsletters and its Solar Energy Market Report.  Its Editor-in-Chief was recently featured on CNBC’s “Green Week.”

The Internet is a great place to start researching solar companies online.  You can compare prices, products and customer reviews.  But don’t stop there.  Do some in-person interviewing before you invest.  Call around to make sure that they stand behind their promises and warranties.  See if there is any plan to acquire another company (or to be acquired).

A smart consumer is a wise one.  I wish you all the best!

  3. Great post for those looking for general information on some of the solar companies in the USA.
If you are on the east coast and looking for a solar panel installer I highly recommend Clean Energy USA. I just finished building their new website and they were a great bunch of guys to work with. Please try out the Solar Incentives Calculator and let me know what you think of it.
