Today we ring in another New Year, which I think is particularly noteworthy at a solar blog. If you are still rubbing your eyes from a late night celebration, and not quite awake enough to see the connection, let me explain.
Humanity has tracked the passage of time primarily by the rising and setting of the sun each day, and the earth’s rotation around the sun each year. Because it takes about 365 1/4 days for the blue planet to make a complete trip around our star (every four years, we add a day to the calendar, known as Leap Day), it is time once again to mark the beginning of another journey for this island home of ours. At least for those of us that follow the Gregorian Calendar.
There are still many mysteries that need to be unraveled about the sun and other stars in the sky. While scientists know much about black holes, solar flares and the death of stars, our own distant future in the Milky Way and/or the cosmos as a whole cannot be definitively predicted. Fortunately, we have discovered how to harness the free, virtually unlimited energy of the sun to provide clean power for our homes, businesses, transportation and more. We have come a long way over time – through many Happy New Years – in developing efficient and affordable solar panels, superior solar technologies, and supporting systems.
As we look forward to 2009, excitement builds for the future of solar power and where we may be both as individuals and as a global community in another 365 1/4 days. Climate change? Off-shore drilling? Will those issues be less urgent if we are running on solar energy and other alternative sources? Or will we allow another year to slip by without making the appropriate investment of time and resources to move solar power viability forward in a meaningful way?
As for Solar Panels – Green Power, 2009 is going to be a big year. I’m going to do my part in the New Year to keep educating you about solar panels, solar power and explaining how solar panels can power your life! Join up now – subscribe if you haven’t done so already. Participate by leaving comments. I’d love to hear from you.
In the meantime, let’s sweep up the confetti and get to work for a solar, Happy New Year!
