RePower America has released a new solar energy commercial. Its advertisements about “clean coal” have been a viral Internet hit. I credit RePower America for exposing the myth that coal could somehow lead us to renewable, clean energy. (but more on this in a later post….)
Now, instead of criticism, it offers real solutions to the energy crisis in America and across the world.
Let’s preview the new national ad for “Solar,” which calls for major investment in and support of solar energy. I get goosebumps each time I see it:
This solar energy commercial is the latest advertisement from RePower America, which has as its foundational aspiration the goal of achieving 100% clean energy in 10 years in America. This will be accomplished through wind and solar power, energy efficiency and plug-in electric cars.
Is that too much of a push for you? Don’t doubt it, just get on the bandwagon!
As the advertisement above shows, we can and should harness the power of the sun – particularly because the American West is “the Saudi Arabia of solar power.” What time like the present to make a real change with respect to fossil fuels? Now, more than ever, we need clean energy and green jobs!
Don’t believe its possible? How about the fact that a single parcel of land in the desert Southwest – a mere 96 miles long – can provide enough solar energy to power our country’s entire electrical system?
I’m ready! Are you?

Can you furnish a comparison cost per megawatt of power generated between this solar panel system and an American BWR or PWR nuclear power plant. This comparison should include all cost involved in each type of plant from inception to retirement and dismantling and should include the cost of equipment required to connect the plant to the nearest power grid.
Thank you

Dont forget insurance, cost to clean up damage to health and the environment from mining and other production, public subsidies, low and high costs/ risk analysis of catstropic failure, short and long term dealing with toxic waste, federal oversight including transportation and seecurity.

Um, no, I'm not ready. Your "single parcel of land in the desert Southwest…a mere 96 miles long" is actually 9216 square miles of desert. Desert is NOT worthless land that it's okay to pave over with a huge power plant, particularly not a concentrating solar power plant like the example shown in the ad. The Department of Energy says CSP uses 1.6 times the water per megawatt hour as coal and 4 times the water per MWh as natural gas. Deserts are, by definition, short on water, and the rivers of the Southwest are already over-allocated to other uses. Where's that water going to come from?
What I'm ready for is empowering individuals, businesses, and communities to meet their own power needs by placing PV panels and small vertical wind turbines on rooftops, utility poles, cell towers, and other structures all over America. Decentralizing our power supply may not create/sustain as many billionaires, but it will make us less vulnerable to natural and man-made disasters.
