Solar Bike

Want to save fuel and commute on a bicycle?  Perhaps your trips are too long, or too steep?  Its time to consider a solar bike.  These hybrid devices allow you to use human power, and also tap into an electric battery that is charged by solar panels.  Its a win-win for you to save money and the environment at the same time.

Solar bikes are street legal – you don’t need a special license.  They can travel at speeds from 10-30 mph.  Depending on the model (2 or 3-wheels), the panels may be situated in different locations, from the front of the bicycle, to a canopy… even on the wheels themselves!  Cost for just about any of the options is less than $1500.  You can even convert a “regular” bicycle for less than $800.

Want to know where you can buy a solar bike?  There are several prominent websites: solar bikes, solar trikes, and the E-V Sunny Bike.  Shown to the right, the E-V Sunny Bike has solar panels installed right into the wheels.

If you don’t want to part with too much of your hard-earned cash, you can build your own solar bike, with directions from the Solar Bike Blog.  Either way, you can commute green and enjoy the energy savings along the way.

Whether you solely with pedal power, or tap into the battery option of a solar bike, it feels great not to burn polluting vehicles to get around.

The best solar bike model may still be yet to come, but in the meantime, you can invest a small amount and get a lot back in energy savings!

What would it take to get you to ride a solar bike?
