One of the questions I frequently get on this blog is how people can save money with solar panel installations?  With the rising national debt and pressure from the ongoing BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, it only makes sense that we see more solar panel projects by the government.

Solar hot water panel

This week, solar hot water installations at the Marine Corps Camp Lejeune military base in North Carolina is the kind of positive, energy-efficient, cost-saving story we’ve been waiting for!  The military solar panels will be placed on 900 homes, each of which will enjoy a reduction of 75% of its hot water energy demands as a result.  In other words, with the installation of just one solar thermal panel per home, three-quarters of the hot water needs will be covered!

The Camp Lejeune solar hot water project will be partly funded with monies authorized by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (the Stimulus Bill).  On top of that, federal and state tax energy efficiency credits reduce the overall cost, as well.  Finally, Actus Land Lease, a real estate developer working on behalf of the military on this project worked to negotiate a reduced price for the solar panels with FLS Energy.

The military will pay off the new solar panels over 12 years at a price that is about 20% less than if the base had purchased electricity from the grid.

Clean green solar power will start flowing at Camp Lejeuene by December this year.
