The year 2009 is arguably one of the best to buy solar panels for homes. First, state and federal government tax credits and other incentives can reduce your cost by up to 80%. Second, you can use the current economic situation to your advantage. Try bargaining with retailers on the cost or installation. You may be surprised at the extra savings that will come your way. Finally, installing solar panels is a quick way to increase the value of your home – often by more than the investment itself.
There are two primary types of solar panels for homes you may be considering installing. Photovoltaic (PV) panels absorb UV light, which is converted to clean electricity. With batteries for storage, and/or connection to the grid and smart metering, you can continuously power your life with solar energy. Coffee makers to curling irons, they can all be free of greenhouse gas emissions. Other than the cost for the panels themselves, your power is virtually cost-free.
Alternatively (or maybe in addition if you are ultra-green) are thermal solar panels. Once installed on your roof, you’ll have solar-warmed hot water. They can even warm your swimming pool. And please do not make the mistake of thinking that it has to be hot outside for your water to be heated! Even in the cloudy, cool Northwest, thermal solar panels are successfully used on homes and businesses.
With incentives and deals being offered these days, most people can expect to recoup the investment through energy savings alone in 3-5 years. When you consider the additional market value of your home after installing solar panels, your ROI (return on investment) is even shorter. And one cannot put a price on the positive feeling that you are helping the environment by converting to clean, emission-free energy.
The best video I’ve found very simply explains the mechanism of solar panels on your home:
If you are receiving a tax refund this spring, you may want to take that extra cash and invest in solar panels for your home. 2009 is your time to shine!

Great article, and terrific job explaining this “Solar” thing.
I just wrote about it on my franchise blog.
There is an interesting new franchise concept out of California, that is offering Solar Panel Franchises.
Here is the link-http://www.thefranchisekingblog.com/2009/02/new-solar-energy-franchise-opportunity.html
Maybe this is one answer to our energy problems!

A basic solar installation from a retailer can take 30 years to pay back and cost you well over $20,000?
I just made my own solar panel. It was so simple and looks just like a bought panel.
I managed to build 4 solar panels for under $200!
