Any time you have a person planning to circumnavigate the globe by themselves, you have to wonder… how will they stay in touch? What if there is an emergency?
For Joseph Ascencao, he is relying on solar power to energize his solo bicycle trip around the world. Now, we know that he won’t actually cross the oceans on his bike, but the journey will take him through each of the continents (except Antarctica) over the next 4-5 years. To charge up his cell phone and keep tunes playing on his iPod, Ascencao has installed solar panels on his bicycle.
The trek started in August from Providence, Rhode Island and followed the eastern seaboard to Key West. He’s now heading to Texas where he will take a break with some friends. From there, Ascencao will ride down to Brazil to meet another group of friends. The entire trip will cover more than 57,000 miles.
Solar panels mounted on his bicycle will generate electricity to keep his electronics humming and allow Ascencao to stay in touch with supporters along the way. In fact, the solo bicycle trip is being recorded through a camera installed on his helmet.
