Electric cars are just about here for the masses. From plug-in hybrids to 100% electric cars, this is the year that we’ll finally see commuters moving away from gasoline pumps and into quiet, emission-free rides.
But some people note that electric cars may still rely on fossil fuels, albeit a bit indirectly, when they draw on electricity that is generated by burning coal. So what is the answer?
For those that want a 100% renewable energy vehicle, how about solar-powered cars? We’re not talking about cars that run on electricity produced by home solar panels. Nope, there are actually vehicles that have been fitted with solar panels that can directly take sunlight and convert it to energy for immediate use.
Heck, there’s a solar plane…. why not a solar-powered car?
We came across this video of a $700,000 solar panel vehicle that can travel over 1800 miles, at speeds of up to 75 miles per hour. Unlike some of the other films of solar vehicles you might find on line, this one is definitely more than a golf cart shaded by a solar array:
If you’re like me, you’ll probably agree that the price tag for that solar-powered car has at least one too many zeros. However, that this “concept” car has been constructed and tested is definitely a step in the right direction. As solar research continues, the efficiency of panels will go up, while costs drop.
In the meantime, electric cars are probably the next best thing. If you re-charge your vehicle using solar energy (either your garage is fitted with solar panels, or you garage at a solar-powered park and ride facility), you can truly make the claim that you’re driving a solar-powered car!
