Solar Powered Hollywood Sign!
Since 1923, the iconic Hollywood Sign has stood above Hollywood Hills (originally to indicate the location of the residential neighborhood). Anyone who comes to Los Angeles to chase a dream of stardom – or perhaps just to try to get a glimpse of the rich and famous – will look up at the famous sign that has been in the same location for nearly 90 years.
As a “sign” of the times, there is now a movement to create a solar powered Hollywood sign. The letters spelling out the word would not be replaced as they were in 1978, but solar panels would be added to the landmark to raise awareness about solar power and other renewable energy resources. Hundreds of photovoltaic (PV) solar panels, spanning 450 feet wide, and reaching 45 feet tall, would bring new meaning to the term “star power.” Drawing on our own, closest star – the sun – the message a solar powered Hollywood sign would send is that we can literally power our lives with clean solar electricity.
Members of the Hollywood Sign Trust initially gathered on Earth Day 2009 to consider the proposal which has support from Deep Patel, the founder and CEO of GoGreenSolar, a solar advocacy group, radio legend Pat ‘Paraquat’ Kelley, Brian Sirgutz, the CEO of CauseCast, KevinWall, the founder of Live Earth, Terry Nunn of the rock group Berlin, Brooke Gardner Fedro of Andre Agassi’s foundation, T. H. Culhane of Solar CITIES; and Maria Menounos of Access Hollywood.
Today, 18 months later, a survey is underway as part of a feasibility study to crease a solar powered Hollywood sign. If you’d like more information or to provide support to the cause, visit the group’s Facebook page!
