- Conceptual design of the solar powered monorail in Italy
A new solar powered monorail, called the Solar Energy Belt, is proposed for the city of Bologna, Italy. The 5084 meter long mass-transit system will provide an eco-friendly way to transport passengers from the city to the airport, and back.
Its not the first solar powered monorail in the word, but the Energy Belt, designed by Iosa Ghini Associati, will incorporate a number of green design elements that will make it unique!
First, the photovoltaic panels will generate 100% of the power needed to move the monorail. Second, PV panels will also be installed on the monorail stations. Finally, vertical gardens at the stations will provide natural insulation to reduce heating and cooling needs year round.
The Energy Belt will run on an elevated track, powered by solar panels installed on the southern-facing side. Passengers will be treated to beautiful views, a sleek, safe ride, and the positive feeling of traveling with zero carbon emissions.
