The opulent City of Dubai within the United Arab Emirates is one of the richest governments in the world, having been built – literally – on oil profits.  So it might be surprising to learn that Dubai is a leader with respect to renewable resources and sustainable projects.  Its latest plan is to tap into solar energy for certain public services.

Solar powered toilets to be installed in Dubai

Recently, it was announced that the general maintenance department of Dubai will be installing solar powered toilets throughout the city.  The solar toilets have two primary purposes: (1) raise environmental awareness, and (2) save taxpayer money.

Solar powered toilets in Dubai will first require the installation of rooftop solar panels on certain designated properties in the city.  Power generated by the PV panels will be used to illuminate lights, run exhaust fans and operate small water pumps for the toilet facilities.  The money saved as a result of going “off-grid” for these operations will allow a return of investment in only 2 years.

More than just taxpayer savings is worth celebrating.  Many believe that solar powered toilets in Dubai will influence and encourage installation of other energy-saving measures throughout the city and other emirate municipalities.  Guess they will just start from the “bottom” up, and increase reliance on solar energy to save money and the planet!

  1. OK, that leaves me scratching my head. How does powering a toilet by any form of energy save money of help the environment. All toilets are powered by – wait for it – the human arm. There is no electricity involved.
