One of my favorite shows on public television is The Hippy Gourmet. The show features healthy cooking, renewable living, and in the Organic Living episode below, the Sun Run solar company in Southern California.

In this video, the President and COO of Sun Run, explains the reasoning behind his company and shows how easy it is to install a solar energy system on your own home. A homeowner also discusses how her neighborhood did a group purchase to reduce overall costs for themselves.

If you ever wanted to see what a solar power system looks like and get a primer on how they work, just watch this short clip.

In another episode of the Hippy Gourmet, we get a tour in a solar-powered chariot, pulled by George W. Bush. While arguably a lot more fun than reviewing solar panels, the chariot is a bit less practical. I can’t really see it saving me money like installing a solar energy system on my roof. Still, I have some great ideas for next Halloween….

Want to catch some more Hippy Gourmet? You can subscribe to the YouTube channel, buy his cookbook, or just tune in to the television show for cooking and clean, green living tips. Watch PBS (public broadcasting system), and check for showtimes.

Did you ever participate in a science fair growing up? I did. But I truly cannot tell you what I came up with 30 years ago. Today’s youth may be much smarter, or at least they have a lot more technology on their side, on which to build these days.

About two months ago, I was feeling pretty proud of my 11-year old’s invention to clean up rivers, using solar energy in part. But then I read about a 12-year old in Oregon who has totally blown the socks off the competition!

The popular PBS show, The Hippy Gourmet, has a blog on which it posted about an Oregon middle-school student who has created a way to harness visible and UV light through advanced solar cell tecnhnology. As described on the blog post:

“William Yuan is a seventh grader in Oregon whose project, titled “A Highly-Efficient 3-Dimensional Nanotube Solar Cell for Visible and UV Light,” may change the energy industry and make solar energy far easier to harness and distribute. At the heart of Yuan’s project is a special solar cell that can harness both visible and ultraviolet light.”

Are you as in awe as I am? Not only did William win his science fair, but he also was awarded a $25,000 scholarship, and is in the search for solar panel technology partners to help him bring his brilliant ideas to the market.

Pretty good for a 7th grader, don’t you think?

What have you done lately to make you proud about your solar power goals and objectives? Kind of makes you want to go back to lockers and backpacks, doesn’t it?

Here’s a video to watch that shows a third place solar documentary award for a film on Solar Panels at JFK Middle School:

Let’s continue to encourage our youngsters to develop new solar technologies and inventions. They are the future!
