“An excellent guide for embracing ecologically-friendly living.” — The Bookwatch, February 2003

Passive solar heating and passive cooling?approaches known as natural conditioning?provide comfort throughout the year by reducing, or eliminating, the need for fossil fuel. Yet while heat from sunlight and ventilation from breezes is free for the taking, few modern architects or builders really understand the principles involved. Now Dan Chiras, author of the popular b (more…)

You don’t have to be rich to live in a solar house. Really. It doesn’t take much to learn how to power even a very modest dwelling with solar energy.

In the United States, federal rebates and other tax incentives are offered to households that install green power, like solar. At least 30% of your cost is probably covered by governmental hand-outs. Individual states may add on top of the federal funds, to increase the money back in your pocket to 50-80%!

That being said, check out this inspiring video about how to live in a solar house:

I found another, wonderful clip that shows not only how to live in a solar house, but the cumulative effect, if we all started living a bit more eco-friendly life:

When you live in a solar house, you are literally enjoying free electricity! Even better, excess power that is generated during the day can be stored in batteries for use overnight, or sold back into the power grid in the form of electricity credits.

Many solar panel systems will pay for themselves in a few years, or less when you consider the increased value of your home or building:

According to The Appraisal Journal, home value increases by $20 for every $1 reduction in annual utility bills. So a solar energy system that saves $200 per year would add $4,000 to the value of the home.

Wouldn’t you love to live in a solar house? What is stopping you?
